Howdy Folks,
What a busy day. You likely woke up this morning to what will surely be the talk of the media over the next couple of days, judging from all the pain and suffering we endured with the death of Jacko. Only this time it’s Ted Kennedy. Being a night owl, I just picked up the alert here in Wyoming about 45 minutes ago that the Senator from Camelot passed away around midnight at his home in Cape Cod at the age of 77; cause of death a malignant brain tumor.
Personally, I did not have much respect for the man, but he was passionate about his causes. Most liberals are. However, in his later years he seemed more tolerable as a man. We all should be so lucky to live this long and not have to endure the pain inflicted on his family over the decades. Unfortunately, his life is about to be a distraction to the rest of the stuff going on around us. Let's hope that whatever health care plan comes out of Washington allows us the opportunity to live to ripe old ages.
Were you impressed with the appointment of a Union leader, the past head of the AFL-CIO, to head the NY Fed? This just makes all kinds of sense if you want to see such experience, or lack thereof, come to what is now our fourth branch of unelected unsupervised government, which controls our money supply and value. Where is Goldman Sachs when you need them? Don't worry though, he will have Jeffrey Immelt, the head of GE right there alongside him on the Board to help make those tough decisions about who gets your money. Unions for the most part are likely to support monetary easement since higher interest rates and higher costs would not be in the best interest of the rank and file. Or do you think he is there to keep Bernanke in line? Where is the shame?
This is quite strange given that the Fed in fact seems to have started to withdraw funds from the market. The monetary base, which serves as the raw material for the money supply, has fallen at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 8% from early April through mid August. This comes after soaring at a 187% pace during the previous eight months. The markets are already concerned about inflation and the Fed seems to be trying to suck some of the liquidity out. The yield curve has steepened over the past few months, while the spread between the plain vanilla 10-year Treasury note and its TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Security) counterpart has jumped from zero at the beginning of this year to 2 percentage points today.
More Fed news with which the new NY head will have to deal is a NY Federal Judge has now ordered the Fed to provide information requested under the Freedom of Information Act by Bloomberg. If and when this information is made public, we are going to see where all the money has gone. What we will see isn’t going to be pretty, so prepare yourself.
I am investigating Commodity ETFs, but I am not yet sure what it all means. I am focusing on EFTs invested in oil and gas that are using the futures market to hedge commodity positions or leverage commodity positions. Here are a couple of links you might want to check out.

I was going to write about Czars tonight, but it will have to wait. I was reading the Drudge report and how scary this Czar thing is. You have to ask yourself who is vetting these folks surrounding the president; I guess nobody except our presidential czar organizer. The White House has taken that job away from the FBI, so I guess America simply no longer needs to be concerned with a few (currently 36) radicals, socialists, Marxists and communist advising our President and spreading your money around to organizations that agree with them and implement their radical policies. It kind of goes with the fact that Leon Panetta, the head of the CIA, no longer seems to be in the picture. Panetta was relieved of having to deal any more with pesky interrogations of terrorists; what do you call a terrorist these days when they inflict “man made disasters”? The White House will now handle such ugly techniques as expanded interrogation in strict accordance with the Army Field Manual with the help of the FBI. This administration must be getting really busy these days since they also want control of the Census, not to mention engage ACORN to help.
Does anyone have a problem with all this except me?
